Queen’s University Belfast is a member of the Russell Group of 24 leading UK research-intensive universities, providing world-class education underpinned by world-class research.

Founded as Queen’s College in 1845, it became a university in its own right in 1908. Today, it is an international center of research and education rooted at the heart of Northern Ireland.

The University has won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education on five occasions – for Northern Ireland’s Comprehensive Cancer Services programs and for world-class achievement in green chemistry, environmental research, paleontology and law.

We accept a wide variety of qualifications. Below you will find information on undergraduate and postgraduate entry requirements, English Language requirements, potential scholarships for international applicants and details of our overseas agents and representatives.

Undergraduate entry requirements

Applicants with the following qualifications will be considered for direct entry to Queen’s University Belfast’s undergraduate Bachelor degree programmes:

  • Intermediate/Higher Education Secondary School Examinations (Year 12) with good grades plus a recognised Foundation programme.
  • Completion of a two or three-year Bachelor degree with a first division (60%+).
  • Between 30 and 36 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB). Information on required grades.

Postgraduate entry requirements

Entry to graduate diploma or taught Masters programmes usually requires either a UK upper second-class (2:1) or a lower second-class (2:2) undergraduate degree. For most courses, your major subject or content of your Bachelor degree may also be considered. Please check the Postgraduate Course Finder for exact entry requirements.

The comparable qualifications from Pakistan are as follows:

UK Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1)

A 4-year undergraduate degree from an HEC recognised institution in Pakistan with a minimum of 70% or 3.3/4 CGPA.

Students who have a 2 or 3 year Bachelor degree plus a first division pass in a Masters degree may be considered on an individual basis.

UK Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2)

Applicants with a 4-year undergraduate degree from an HEC recognised institution in Pakistan with a minimum of 60% or 3.0/4 CGPA.

Queen’s University Admissions Office staff have expertise on a wide range of qualifications from around the world and will be able to assess your application’s comparability to the UK entry requirement. Please ensure you upload copies of all official transcripts and final award certificates for programmes already completed and those currently being completed.

If you are interested in postgraduate Computing, Finance or Management courses, but do not meet the entry requirements, you may wish to consider a pre-masters Graduate Diploma offered by INTO Queen’s.

Students interested in undertaking a PhD at Queen’s University need good grades in their Bachelor and Masters degree programmes awarded by a recognised university, in addition to a strong research proposal.

English language requirements

Applicants will normally need to demonstrate a level of English equivalent to 6.5 IELTS or 90 TOEFL IBT (Internet based test). However, some courses have higher or lower requirements (please check individual programme requirements in the relevant undergraduate or postgraduate University Coursefinder.
