What is Conditional Admission to degree study?

It means that you can be accepted to the University of Manitoba (U of M) at the undergraduate level, under the condition that you meet the University’s English language proficiency requirements through the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs. These programs are supported by the ELC.

Students who choose this route agree to three (3) consecutive terms of study in order to retain their conditional acceptance to the U of M.

Conditional Admission is a popular choice because after completing your ELC studies, students will have met the University of Manitoba’s English requirements.  A conditional letter of acceptance is also preferred by Canada’’s embassy in order to receive a study visa.

What is Admission to Academic English only?

It is for students who wish to improve their English skills in an academic environment without planning to attend the University of Manitoba afterwards. This method is also ideal for students who plan on completing a Graduate Studies program at the University of Manitoba but have not yet met the English Proficiency requirements.

While studying with the English Language Centre, students studying Academic English only can choose to apply to the University of Manitoba afterwards.

Admission Requirements

Students Must:

• Be 18 years of age or older by the program start date
• Meet Canadian Visa requirements
• Read, understand and abide by all program guidelines and refund policy.
• Have an intermediate knowledge of English.*

*Any student that presents an IELTS score of 4.5 is guaranteed placement in the English Language Centre in Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) Level 1.  All students will take ELC’s placement test when they arrive for opportunity to place higher in IAEP.  If students do not provide an IELTS score, they will be required to attend our mandatory institutional placement test prior to the start of the term. If a student does not meet the minimum English proficiency requirement for the ELC they will be advised to study at least one term at the Extended Education’s English Language Studies before they can retest to the ELC. (Please see Refund Policy for details).

If a student meets the requirements to enter directly into IAEP Level 5, please submit an original copy of your proficiency test score report (by mail; or e-mail a scanned version of the original score report) one month prior to the start of the academic term in which you will be studying.  Appropriate scores for direct entry into Level 5 are:

• IELTS (5.5 or higher)
• TOEFL (Minimum of 16 in each component and 70 overall)
• CanTest (3.5 Listening, 3.5 Reading, 3.5 Writing)

Any student arriving late cannot be guaranteed placement in the ELC.

We reserve the right to deny admission and to refuse re-admission to students who do not fulfill the above conditions.

English is the language of instruction and communication at the University of Manitoba. Accordingly, an applicant whose primary language is not English, or whose previous education has been conducted in another language, must demonstrate a command of English sufficient to meet the demands of classroom instruction, written assignments and participation in tutorials and discussions.

Applicant Categories

1. Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents and others whose primary language is English
   All such applicants are deemed to be proficient in English by virtue of having lived and been educated in a country where English is a common or primary language.
2. Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents whose primary language is NOT English
   All such applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English by meeting the University of Manitoba standards as outlined in the following English Proficiency options below.
3. Student Authorization Applicants (Student Visa)
   All applicants who are NOT Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada and whose primary language is not English must provide evidence of proficiency in English by meeting The University of Manitoba standards as outlined in the following English Language Proficiency options below.

English Language Test Score Requirements

If your primary language is not English, you will be required to demonstrate your proficiency in the use of the English language by meeting any of the options listed below. Please note that the information in this section applies to students entering undergraduate programs of study. If you are applying for admission to a graduate program, please check their website for information on each program’s English language proficiency requirements.

1. a) Paper-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
   Achieve a minimum score of 550 with no less than 50 (unscaled) in each component.
   OR
   b) Internet-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
   Achieve a minimum score of 86 with no less than 20 on each of component.
2. Achieve minimum scores of 4.5 in Reading, 4.5 in Listening, and 4.0 in Writing on the CanTEST (Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees) .
3. Achieve a minimum score of 6.5 based upon the Academic Module on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
4. Achieve a minimum score of 80 on the MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) offered by the University of Michigan.
5. Achieve a minimum grade of C in the University of Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English.
6. Achieve a score of 60 or more in the CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment).
7. Achieve a minimum of 58% in the Pearson Test of English.
8. Achieve a minimum of 65% in Level 5 of the direct entry English program (also known as Intensive Academic English Program orIAEP), as taught by the English Language Centre of the University of Manitoba.

Results for most language tests, including TOEFL, IELTS, and CanTEST, expire two years from the test date. Please confirm the validity of your test results.

Choose an undergraduate program

Students applying for admission from high school will often begin their university studies in University 1 as a first step to their desired program.

Review the entrance requirements
The requirements for all of our programs are found in our admissions requirements section. If you are not sure if you meet these requirements, contact our office for advice. If you are an international student, make sure to also check the additional information on admission requirements, restrictions, and processes in our international student section.

Check available terms and application deadlines
The terms and deadlines for all of our programs are listed in our apply for admission section. Your application and fee must be submitted online or postmarked by the deadline to be considered. Note that some programs will continue to accept in-person paper applications after the online application process is closed. If you miss the deadline for your preferred program, check with our office for alternate suggestions.

Make sure you have the following information available before you begin the online application:

• Basic biographical information such as address, date of birth, immigration details if not born in Canada, etc. You will require an email address; if you do not already have one, you can obtain a free address at any of a number of sites including hotmail.com, yahoo.com or gmail.com.
• Details of your current and prior education including starting and end dates.
• A valid VISA or MasterCard if you wish to pay the required application fee by credit card. You will also have the option to complete the application form online and submit the application fee by mail (cheque or international money order in Canadian funds made payable to the University of Manitoba) or in person at our office (cheque, money order, cash, or debit card). Both the application form and the application fee must be received in our office by the admission deadline.

$90 Canadian Citizens/Permanent Residents ($80 for summer 2015 applicants)
$120 International Applicants ($110 for summer 2015 applicants)

1. Student rates are also provided for transportation using the local bus system. Cost for a university student monthly bus pass is approximately $60.00.
2. Students who are covered under another medical plan may choose to decline participation in the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) health plan. Further information is available from the UMSU Health Insurance Office.
