Overview
The University of Sussex was the first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in August 1961. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, Sussex has become a leading teaching and research institution.
Why choose University of Sussex?
We offer a range of courses throughout the calendar year in English Language and Modern Languages, open to the public as well as students and staff at the University. The Centre is responsible for undergraduate degrees in modern languages, and English Language Teaching programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We also recognise that students from disciplines across the University will, as future global citizens, travel, live and work in countries across the world. For this reason we have developed a flexible portfolio of language electives which you can take as part of your degree. You can also study autonomously in our Language Learning Centre, which has a digital language suite and multimedia workstations for the private study of over fifty world languages.
he tuition fee you are charged will depend on whether you are classified as ‘home/EU’, ‘Islands’ or ‘overseas’. The rules on how you are classified are strictly defined by the UK Government. In general:
- home/EU: students who are settled and ordinarily resident in the UK, and EU nationals who are ordinarily resident in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the overseas territories for the three years prior to the start of the course
- Islands: students from the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, who are therefore within the British Isles, but outside the UK (with the exception of the BM BS in Medicine, where a different fee applies, Islands students are charged fees at the home/EU rate)
- overseas: students from other countries (there are exceptions, such as students who are temporarily outside the UK/EU, those with refugee status granted by the UK Government, and migrant workers).
Applicants with UK or other EU nationality should be aware that such nationality does not guarantee that you will be classed as a ‘home/EU’ student – you must also satisfy various residence requirements.
If your fee-status classification is unclear, we will send you a questionnaire to complete, so that your status can be determined by the University.
We will help you prepare to come to Sussex, welcome you when you arrive and support you throughout your time at Sussex.
We can offer advice and guidance on a range of issues including:
- immigration and visa advice. The International Student Advisers offer a confidential specialist advice service, where we can answer your immigration questions and guide you through the process of applying for your visa
- we offer general support and advice on a range of issues related to living in the UK
- during the main arrival weekend in September, we organise for members of staff to greet and assist you at Heathrow and Gatwick airports, and we run a bookable coach service from Heathrow airport to the campus
- we organise specific events for international students as part of the university’s induction programme, as well as social events throughout the year
- we organise a programme of day trips to various places across the country to enable you to make the most of your time in the UK.
We can help advise you on your conditions of work during your studies, and your working options in the UK after your studies, with regard to immigration requirements.

OUR STAFF
Sussex has developed a reputation for innovation and inspiration, and attracts leading thinkers and researchers. We have over 2,100 staff, including around 540 teaching and research staff, and 270 research-only staff. We have counted three Nobel Prize winners, 13 Fellows of the Royal Society, six Fellows of the British Academy and a winner of the prestigious Crafoord Prize on our faculty.
INNOVATIVE RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP
Sussex is a leading research university, as reflected in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Over 90 per cent of Sussex research activity was rated as world leading, internationally excellent or internationally recognised, confirming the University among the leading 30 research universities in the UK.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
The University of Sussex has over 13,000 students, of which over a third are postgraduates. Creative thinking, pedagogic diversity, intellectual challenge and interdisciplinary have always been fundamental to a Sussex education.
INTERNATIONAL SUSSEX
From its foundation, Sussex has had an international perspective to its academic activities and its outlook. The University attracts staff and students to its campus from over 120 different countries across the world. Nearly a third of staff come from outside the UK.
Our research tackles major world issues, with leading areas of expertise such as climate change and development studies. The University has extensive links with many institutions worldwide, such as Peking University, National Taiwan University and the Harvard-Sussex programme.
CAMPUS LIFE
Sussex has one of the most beautiful campus locations in Britain. Situated in rolling parkland on the edge of Brighton, the campus combines award-winning architecture with green open spaces.
Designed by Sir Basil Spence, the buildings that make up the heart of the campus were given listed building status in 1993. Falmer House is one of only two educational buildings in the UK to be Grade I listed in recognition of its exceptional interest.
CITY LIFE
Nine minutes by train from Campus is the wonderful city of Brighton – Quirky, colourful – and never boring – Brighton is one of the UK’s most vibrant destinations. Brighton offers an incredible range of attractions for every taste and every age group.
Brighton has one of the most thriving bar, restaurant and café scenes anywhere outside London. From bohemian bars and arty clubs, to high-class restaurants and traditional pubs, there’s something for everyone.
If you’re looking for arts and culture, Brighton is bursting at the seams! You can find classy productions at the Theatre Royal, or cult and arthouse films at The Duke of York – Britain’s oldest continuously operating cinema. Every May, the Brighton Festival gets into full swing – turning Brighton into the cultural focal point for the whole of the UK.
For all of its energy, Brighton is still very much a classic relaxed English seaside town. Brighton Pier and the city’s Regency promenades offer a stylish glimpse of the past. And, of course, the most popular attraction in Brighton remains its beach. Expect it to be busy in the summer months with day trip visitors and locals looking for fun in the sun!
And if all that’s not enough to keep you entertained then central London is just 45 minutes by train!
