There are three levels of study available at the University of Leicester: undergraduate (BA, BSc etc), postgraduate taught (MA, MSc, etc) and postgraduate research (e.g PhD).  Some courses are available by distance learning.

All applicants should demonstrate their competency in English language by successfully completing one of the following:

• Secondary education in a country accepted as teaching in the medium of English.
• At least two years of an undergraduate and/or a higher degree in a country accepted as teaching in the medium of English, within three years of the start date of the course.
• An accepted qualification in English language at a level specified for the subject area.
• An accepted test in English language at a level specified for the subject area, within two years of the start date of the course.
• An English language pre sessional course at the University of Leicester at a level specified for the subject area.
• The Leicester International Study Centre foundation course at a level specified for the subject area.

Applicants may be asked to successfully pass a test which is set and marked by the University of Leicester at a level specified for the subject area.

English language preparatory courses for international students

If you do not yet meet our English requirements we can help you to improve your English to the necessary standard. The University’s English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help campus-based students with the English you need for your studies.

Each preparatory course consists of 21 hours of intensive language training per week in small, international classes (maximum 16 students, but usually no more than 12). You can join a course at any point, depending on your current language level.

Whatever type of course you study at the University of Leicester, finance will always be an important factor. There are costs to be met: tuition fees, course materials, accommodation, travel, living expenses. But there are also possible sources of funding: loans and grants, bursaries and scholarships. And there is always advice available, through the University and through national online resources.

In the current academic year (2014/15) the balance of income and expenditure of the University is expected to show a small surplus (see below), which is reinvested to improve facilities. The University is not a private or limited company and has no shareholders.

Undergraduate (UCAS)

UCAS will start receiving applications for entry in October 2016 from 1 September 2015.

The normal closing date for applications to reach the UCAS office is 15 January 2016, except for Medicine where the closing date is 15 October 2015.

You are advised to apply as early as is consistent with having made a careful and considered choice of institutions and courses. It is in your best interests to apply before the 15 January deadline. However, late applications, including those from outside the UK/EU, are in practice accepted by UCAS and the University of Leicester throughout the remainder of the application year, but are considered at the University’s discretion.

• Two completed references (one must be academic) OR names and contact details of two people from whom we can request references (one must be an academic referee).

• Proof of English language competency (if your first language is not English)

Postgraduate research (PhD and Professional Doctorates)

Applications for PhD and MPhil Degrees and Professional Doctorates

Pakistani students graduating with an Intermediate Certificate or High Secondary School Certificate (HSSC – year 12) will need to complete a Foundation Year to be eligible for admission to an undergraduate degree programme.

Undergraduate (Bachelor’s) 

• In some exceptional cases, students may be accepted to some undergraduate degree programmes if they have successfully completed the High Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) with passes in 4 or more subjects with an average of over 90%

Master’s degrees and other taught postgraduate programmes

• Pakistani students who hold a Bachelor’s degree with honours (four-year BA, BBA) with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4 will be considered for entry to a Master’s degree.
• Students with a Bachelor’s degree with honours (BSc, BEng) with a minimum GPA of 2.5/4.0 will be considered for entry to a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering.

PhD degrees and other research postgraduate programmes

Applicants for PhD degrees and other postgraduate research programmes (MPhil, DClinPsy, DSocSci, EdD, EngD, MD) are required to have Bachelor’s degree with honours (four-year BA, BBA) with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4, usually in a related subject area, (offers may vary depending on the intended subject of study) which is equivalent to a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree (also known as a 2:1) from a recognised Pakistani university.
