Swinburne University of Technology
Established as a university in 1992, Swinburne is a world-class, multidisciplinary institution leading the way in science, technology, business, design and innovation. The university’s strengths build on the founding principles of equal opportunity, student-focused learning and industry engagement.

Quality teaching
Swinburne has an agile and forward-thinking understanding of global business and government which means it responds effectively to the changing needs of industry. The university provides students with access to high-quality teaching, exposure to high-impact global research, and active engagement with both industry and the community.

World-ranked university
In the 2015 QS World University Rankings, Swinburne was recognised as one of the world’s top universities in several categories:

  1. QS Top 100 Under 50 universities – reinforcing Swinburne as a university with a depth of expertise in teaching and research, both in Australia and internationally.
  2. QS Graduate Employability Rankings – featuring in the top 200 ranked universities, Swinburne’s reputation for producing graduates that are in high demand was confirmed.
  3. QS World Rankings of Universities by Subject – recognised as having one of the best design schools in the world by ranking Swinburne in the top 100 for Art and Design.
  4. QS World University Rankings by Faculty – ranked in the top 250 in the world for Engineering and Technology.

Research excellence
Much of Swinburne’s research is concentrated in its specialist centres which are noted for their industry and institutional links, community service and multi-disciplinary approach. Graduates are widely recognised for the contribution they are making to Australian and international industry, business and society through the solving of important practical problems by applied, interdisciplinary research.

A truly international university, Swinburne has developed successful relationships with universities around the world. There is extensive collaborative research and mobility of teaching staff between Swinburne and our partner universities.

Modern and safe campus
Swinburne invests heavily in providing our students and researchers with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Significant recent developments include the $100 million Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre (AMDC) and the $140 million Advanced Technologies Centre (ATC) at our Hawthorn campus. The ATC houses leading-edge research facilities including the Smart Structures Laboratory, the first of its kind in Australia.

Just 10 minutes from the centre of Melbourne, the Hawthorn campus is Swinburne’s main campus and the hub of our teaching, research and development activities. Located in one of the city’s most attractive inner suburbs, the campus offers a desirable student lifestyle and a state-of-the-art learning environment.

In a world where most students believe they will work in jobs which don’t yet exist, Swinburne is preparing students to confidently face their future in the world as it will become by ensuring they have the skills to constantly adapt in a fast changing and uncertain world.

Undergraduate programs – The Swinburne Advantage
At Swinburne we understand it takes more than just qualifications to compete in today’s job market. We equip our students with the knowledge and capabilities they need to establish successful careers through high-quality teaching and work-integrated learning.

Work Integrated Learning
For more than 50 years Swinburne has been partnering with leading Australian and global organisations to offer students authentic workplace experiences through Work Integrated Learning: undertaking industry internships, solving day-to-day challenges in the field and gaining the professional skills that put knowledge into practice.

Professional degrees
Swinburne’s professional degrees feature a mandatory 12-month professional placement which is normally undertaken during your third year of study. Students will be paid for the placement, receive academic credit and gain invaluable skills that will ensure they are job ready upon graduation. These degrees can be completed, including the 12-month placement, in as little as 3.5 years.

Professional internships
Some of the most valuable knowledge will come from observing industry professionals at work in a student’s future field. An internship gives students the opportunity to do this while they are studying. If selected to undertake an internship, students will be paired with a leading employer in their area of study. Internships are normally taken for one or two days per week over one semester or intensively during the summer or winter break.

Industry-linked projects
Problem-solving is a strength that can bolster your prospective career. Industry-linked projects invite students to take on authentic workplace challenges related to their future career. All projects are team-based and guided by real industry professionals. Industry-linked projects are normally undertaken as a unit of study during the final year of a course.

Accreditation placements
Some degrees include a mandatory work placement as a requirement of professional accreditation. Some professional experiences or clinical placements are credited towards the degree, others not, but all are compulsory. We have long-standing relationships with top organisations that welcome Swinburne students every year. Getting great experience with an impressive company will allow students to maximise this opportunity to the fullest.

Industry study tours
The cultural experience of international study offers students a personal growth opportunity: to develop insight, communication skills and a depth of understanding. Industry study tours are designed to give students overseas experience that will benefit their career. The tours give credit towards a degree and offer a unique opportunity to enrich learning and gain an international perspective within a selected area of study.

Valued graduates
Swinburne is known for its links with successful business and industry, and for developing international partnerships and collaborations. This local and international engagement ensures that our students graduate with valuable and sought after skills that employers value.

Professional master degrees

All of the professional master degrees include the Career Success Program, which is delivered over two years, and includes individualised career planning and one-on-one career coaching sessions. The Career Success Program also includes professional training designed to increase students’ employability and workplace communication, negotiation and conflict management skills.
